The first iteration of the Space Project Management Meeting was known as the Space Leadership Retreat, first held at NSBE World Headquarters in 2006.  At the time, the SLR was limited to members of the Space SIG Board of Directors.  For several years, the SLR continued to be held at NSBE World Headquarters, but in 2011, the SLR was co-located with the NSBE Alumni Summit, held during the days immediately preceding the Summit.  This was done in an effort to help increase Summit attendance while also providing board members with exciting destinations.  The SLR was held alongside the Summit in Ft. Lauderdale (2011), Las Vegas (2012), and Puerto Rico (2013).  In 2014, the SLR was moved to NASA Johnson Space Center.  In 2015, the SLR was held at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.  In 2016, the SLR was renamed the Space Leadership Conference and held on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, in an effort to expand the JEDI (Jumpstart to Engineering Design and Invention) by partnering the Arusha project with the Embry-Riddle NSBE chapter.

Recognizing the importance of applying project management expertise to Space SIG operations, the event is being named the Space Project Management Meeting for 2017.
